Modeling Day- and Nighttime Population Exposure at High Resolution: Application to Volcanic Risk Assessment in Campi Flegrei

چکیده
Improving analyses of population exposure to potential natural hazards, especially sudden ones, requires more detailed geodemographic data. Availability of such information for large areas is limited by specific database requirements and their cost. This paper introduces and tests a new approach for refining spatio-temporal population distribution at high resolution by combining diverse geoinformation layers. Its value is demonstrated in the context of disaster risk analysis and emergency management by using the data in a real volcanic risk scenario in Campi Flegrei, located within the metropolitan area of Naples, Italy. Results show that there is significant variation in exposure from nighttime to daytime in the study area. The proposed modeling approach can be applied and customized for other metropolitan areas, ultimately benefiting disaster risk assessment and mitigation.

Investigating the topography effect in modeling of deformation field of CampiFlegrei volcano using the method of fundamental solution
Considering the importance of predicting volcano eruption and the large number of volcanic peaks across the world, having enough researches in this field is vital. Based on geodetic researches, surface deformation of the earth in the form of uplift or subsidence in the volcanic region, is an indicator of the magma's movement respectively towards the crater or the exit from the tank around. In...
متن کاملProbabilistic-numerical assessment of pyroclastic current hazard at Campi Flegrei and Naples city: Multi-VEI scenarios as a tool for “full-scale” risk management
The Campi Flegrei volcanic field (Italy) poses very high risk to the highly urbanized Neapolitan area. Eruptive history was dominated by explosive activity producing pyroclastic currents (hereon PCs; acronym for Pyroclastic Currents) ranging in scale from localized base surges to regional flows. Here we apply probabilistic numerical simulation approaches to produce PC hazard maps, based on a co...
متن کاملHazard assessment during caldera unrest at the Campi Flegrei, Italy: a contribution from gravity–height gradients
Hazard assessment and risk mitigation at restless calderas is only possible with adequate geophysical monitoring. We show here how detailed long-term microgravity and deformation surveys may contribute to hazard assessment at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in Italy by evaluating gravity–height change (∆g/∆h) gradients obtained during ground inflation and deflation between 1981 and 2001. Such g...
متن کاملOperational eruption forecasting at high-risk volcanoes: the case of Campi Flegrei, Naples
High risk volcanic events are commonly preceded by long periods of unrest during which scientists are asked to provide near real-time forecasts. The rarity of such events, inaccessibility of the underground volcanic system, non-linear behaviors, and limited datasets constitute major sources of uncertainty. In order to provide reasoned guidance in the face of uncertainties, monitoring observatio...
متن کاملGeochemistry of Melt Inclusions from the Fondo Riccio and Minopoli 1 Eruptions at Campi Flegrei (Italy)
Campi Flegrei is a large volcanic complex located west of the city of Naples, Italy. The area has been the site of volcanic activity for more than 60 ka and represents a potential volcanic hazard owing to the large local population. In this study, the geochemistry of the magma associated with two different eruptions at Campi Flegrei has been characterized, with the aim to identify geochemical t...
